Game of Thrones: Legends Community Q&A
Hello Game of Thrones: Legends community!
We, on the community team, are here to give you a more in depth look into the past and future changes to Game of Thrones: Legends. We’ve interviewed our beloved Design Director, BattleKitty, with the goal of providing the community with more insight into why Game of Thrones: Legends is undergoing such a transformation.
Q: Hi, BattleKitty! Thanks for taking the time to answer some of our questions. To start, we would like to know… There have been a lot of changes to the tuning of Factions and different champions. With all of these changes, what is the ultimate goal?
A: At the heart of it, our goal is to build a well-balanced game where every Faction and every Champion has the potential to shine. Whether you prefer the icy resolve of the Starks, the cunning of the Boltons, or the sheer speed of the Free Cities, we want you to feel like your team has a fighting chance - in every mode, at every level of play.
This recent wave of tuning came in response to how things landed post world-wide launch. In truth, only two Factions were dominating, and while it was exciting to see the Greens rise up so quickly, it left very little room for other houses to prosper. That’s not the world we want to build. We want banners to rise and fall at the whims of players’ team compositions and strategies, and that requires a careful balance of power.
We like to think of our Champions like toys, crafted with care for you to discover, enjoy, and master. While not everyone will unlock every toy right away, it’s important that whatever team you can build where you are in the game - it feels competitive and satisfying to play.
In short: while it’s common for games that have been running for a while to do tuning passes to shift the meta, counter dominant strategies, or push a certain playstyle, our goal this time was more about setting things right from how we started.
Q: We love all our Champions and Factions equally! Should we expect more changes as big as the ones made in the last few months? What other game elements will see some updates?
A: We love them all too - and believe us, it’s hard to pick favorites when every Faction brings something unique to the battlefield. Over the past few months, we’ve taken on some of our biggest balance updates to date, and we’re nearing the end of that tuning journey. A few remaining Factions are still getting some love behind the scenes, and we’re looking forward to rounding those out in the coming months.
After the upcoming Faction updates to Lannisters and Targaryens, you won't be seeing overhauls of this scale again in the future. This has been special - a chance to realign the game’s foundation, to make sure that no one house towers above the rest, and that every player, no matter where they are, can find strength in the Champions they have.
Looking forward, our focus will shift from sweeping changes to more surgical adjustments - lifting up those who fall behind, rather than cutting down what rises too high (unless, of course, something breaks the game or creates an exploit).
As you may have noticed, our balance philosophy follows a kind of rock-paper-scissors relationship between Factions. Some are naturally stronger against others, and we think that dynamic is part of what makes the game rich with strategy and replayability.
Finding that balance isn’t always easy - it means making bold choices, sometimes swinging big and hoping the pieces fall into place. But we do it with care, and always with your experience at the center of our decisions.
Q: Looking forward, how will these changes help further shape the future of Game of Thrones: Legends?
A: Once this wave of tuning is completed, we can finally sleep. Just kidding… We believe the game will be in a place where every Faction feels worth exploring, mastering, and bringing to battle. That’s the kind of foundation we’ve been building toward - not just for balance today, but for the future of Legends as it continues to grow.
With each Faction playing as intended and each Champion fulfilling their designed role, we’ll be in a much better position to spot what’s missing and where new Champions can bring the most value. Whether that's critical support on a competitive team, or niche tactics for a specific chapter in the story Campaign, we’ll be able to design with greater clarity and intention.
It also helps us deliver better experiences across all game modes; from immersive story-driven content to high-stakes competitive play. And just as importantly, it allows us to better understand what you, our players, are responding to: what strategies you love, what mechanics excite you, and where we can still surprise and delight you.
Q: Would you like to share any other sentiments with the community about the future of Game of Thrones: Legends? Is there anything exciting the community should look forward to?
A: Absolutely - and thank you for sticking with us through all the change. As I mentioned in a recent Dev Diary, balancing Champions and Factions is just one part of the puzzle. None of it matters if the systems that surround them - summoning, events, gear, progression - don’t feel rewarding, intuitive, or fun.
We know that some of our foundational systems didn’t quite hit the mark, and as soon as our Champion tuning work wraps up, our attention will shift toward polishing and improving those core experiences. Whether that means giving you more agency to collect the Champions you want, refining event structures, or reworking progression paths, our goal is simple: to make the game more enjoyable, accessible, and worthy of your time.
Of course, we’re also working on new features we’ve long had on our roadmap, and your feedback plays a key role in shaping where we want to go next. The roadmap isn’t carved in stone - it evolves based on what we learn, what we see in the data, and most importantly, what we hear from you.
We take this work seriously. Every system, every Champion, every change. We aim to make each one with care. And while we might not respond to every suggestion immediately, know that your voice is heard, and that sometimes, what you’ve asked for might be just around the corner.
There’s more to come, and we’re excited for you to see it.
Thank you, BattleKitty, for taking the time to answer our questions. And thank YOU, players, for reading and helping to provide an abundant amount of feedback.
